Smeeks: New Candy Shop Coming To CenPho

June 10, 2009 | By

“Why doesn’t somebody open a _____ in Central Phoenix?”
Fill in that blank for any kind of stylish indie business (especially anything food- and beverage-related), and I’ve wondered it aloud. For all the interesting things going on in CenPho these days, there’s still room for plenty more.
Literally a day after I had a conversation about why somebody needs to open a cool candy boutique, I heard a rumor that somebody really is. It’s called Smeeks.

Phoenix Market Open 5 Days A Week

June 5, 2009 | By

Attention shoppers! The first grocery store to open in downtown Phoenix in nearly 30 years is taking shape.

On a recent afternoon, a crew worked on plumbing and electrical systems for the 2,000-square-foot store, which is expected to open sometime in August. Soon they will bring in refrigerated cases, ovens and other kitchen equipment, said Alan McLaughlin, the store’s general manager.

“We will source everything local,” he said, including meat, milk and cheese. “This will be a hangout place in the neighborhood.”

The $475,000 project is an offshoot of the popular, biweekly Phoenix Public Market, which is run by the non-profit Community Food Connections.

Jackson Street warehouse gets a facelift

June 5, 2009 | By

Not everyone is scaling back or closing up shop as evidenced by the renovation of this warehouse space at 22 E Jackson St, in the Downtown Phoenix Warehouse District. The new owners are renovating the building for use as their offices. As you can see from the exterior photo, they are in the process of exposing the brick. It’s really very attractive.
