Public Market Improvements Begin
Improvements began Monday for the Downtown Phoenix Public Market’s permanent grocery store, which is expected to open in June.
The 4000 square-foot retail space at 14 E Pierce St will be open five days a week and will serve as downtown Phoenix’s first local foods grocery store.
Downtown pharmacy set to open at CityScape next year
CVS Pharmacy will open a drugstore in downtown Phoenix’s CityScape complex, company officials will announce Wednesday. It would be the first time since 1976 that a pharmacy stood in the downtown neighborhood south of the Interstate 10.
The planned 13,000-square-foot drugstore could open as early as June 2010 on the southwest corner of Jefferson Street and First Avenue, said Michael DeNitto, a CVS regional director.
Foreclosure Sales Activity is Heating Up
Not only in Downtown Phoenix, but throughout Maricopa County, the sale of foreclosed homes increased dramatically in March. The number of residential homes sold in March of 2009, was the greatest number sold since October 2005. According to statistics compiled and reported by Fletcher Wilcox, V.P. with Grand Canyon Title Agency, there were 6,893 closings in March and 68% of those homes were “lender owned” homes. Another interesting statistic was that 38% of the homes sold for under $100,000. The inventory of available homes in the under $100,000 price range is down to about a 3 month supply. These stats are indicating that the market is in recovery at the bottom of the home sale price range, according to Fletcher’s report.
Civic Space Park Brings More Than Just A Little Green To Phoenix
The city of Phoenix, Arizona State University and community members will formally celebrate the grand opening of downtown’s newest park site, Downtown Civic Space Park, at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 16. The official dedication event will be part of a full day of informal activities from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to introduce the park to the public. The park also will host live music from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 17 as part of Third Friday activities in and around downtown.

Bring a friend to a Yoga Fusion class this week at SuTRA Midtown Yoga for a buy one, get one free deal.
One guest will pay the regular class price of $15 and the second guest will get in free.
Yoga Fusion is a combination of yoga with alternative forms of movement including various dance styles and martial arts. It aims to give participants a workout and a way to release their stress in a new, entertaining way. Yoga Fusion does not require a background in either yoga, dance or martial arts.
Phoenix sees fall in crime reports
The number of reported crimes in downtown Phoenix has plummeted more than 50 percent since 1999, and it dropped nearly 10 percent from 2007 to 2008, police statistics show.
The drop is the result of old-fashioned police work, a national decrease in crime and a downtown building spree that has transformed the neighborhood, police and other experts say.
Midtown Museum District continues to impress
The Midtown Museum District continues to do a lot of really great things for their area. From its relatively small beginnings, Margaret and Julia have grown this organization into something to truly be reckoned with. Along with some good help and a lot of grit, determination and shoe leather they are doing what communities all over town should consider.
Janet Echelman sculpture being reinstalled
A quick look over to the ASU College of Public Programs website’s live webcam of the Downtown Phoenix Civic Space park shows that the long-awaited sculpture, “Her Secret is Patience”, is being reinstalled after a couple of delays.
