Heard Museum to Celebrate Frida Kahlo’s birthday with art and music and more, presented by the Phoenix Fridas, July 9

The Heard Museum honors legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo with a weekend celebration of her birthday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at the museum, 2301 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. Wednesday, July 6 was Kahlo’s (1907-1954) actual birthday, her 109th. But the Heard is holding the party on Saturday to allow more visitors to be part of the celebration, which is included in museum admission.

Join the Phoenix Fridas, an award-winning all-female Phoenix-based Latina artists’ collective, as they showcase their art, available for purchase. Heard visitors will remember the Fridas from their helping us publicize the recent exhibitions “Frida Kahlo–Her Photos” and “Las Favoritas de Frida–Selections from the Heard Collection.” Winners of two Phoenix New Times Best of Phoenix awards, the group has appeared on the DIY Network’s “Uncommon Threads.”

Several activities are planned:

o Enjoy the sounds of Mariachi Pasión–an all-female mariachi group–11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
o See Ballet Folklórico Ollin Yoliztli perform beautiful dances starting at 2:30 p.m. in the Steele Auditorium.
o Special food and drinks will be available for purchase at the Museum’s Courtyard Café and a gorgeous birthday cake will be served to party guests starting at 3:30 p.m.
o Also on hand: A spoken-word presentation about the life and works of Frida Kahlo.
o Participate in fun activities for all ages, such as make and take crafts and coloring pages, while supplies last. Put your Frida on, because the first 25 Frida lookalikes will receive a goodie bag and participate in a fashion procession!
o And in homage to the painter who is said to have single-handedly created the selfie trend decades before the smartphone, a selfie booth with props will be available for pictures.
