David Krietor has served as CEO of Downtown Phoenix, Inc. (“DPI”) since April 8, 2013. In that time, he has worked with community stakeholders to develop the downtown we want. “Your Downtown” shares his thoughts and DPI’s progress with the downtown community and beyond. Read the other chats here.

The phrase “Things that go bump in the night” takes on a whole new meaning this Halloween season what with the thousands upon thousands of visitors to Downtown Phoenix this past weekend for Garth Brooks concerts at Talking Stick Resort Arena, Zombie Walk 7 at Heritage & Science Park, and several charitable walks starting at CityScape.

And there’s more spooktacular activities to behold: attend one of many Halloween parties downtown and across the Valley, experience “Ghostly Stories” downtown, or take a ghost tour at the haunted Orpheum Theatre. But heed the advice of our friends at the University of Arizona Health Sciences about Halloween hazards.

THE END IS NEAR

Leaving ghouls and goblins behind, local entrepreneurs are making headlines too. At last week’s Phoenix Smart City App Hack at downtown’s Orpheum Theatre, five app makers pitched their ideas to a panel of local technology influencers all vying for the opportunity to represent Phoenix at the Smart City Expo in Barcelona this November. The goal of the Phoenix Smart City App Hack was to help solve five key urban problems: energy and emissions; urban mobility; urban shopping and retail, culture, and tourism; and the collaborative city. The winner was ParkX and their app that attempts to bring parking meters to the 21st century. The technology allows drivers to pay directly from their smartphones, monitor time left, and add extra money electronically.
