Lace up your walking shoes, because the 22nd Art Detour is upon us. Artlink, which has guided our First and Third Fridays to prominence, is throwing out the red carpet for some of the Valley’s most notable artists and art spaces around Downtown Phoenix.
The festivities begin Saturday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and roll over into Sunday, March 7, from 12 to 5 p.m. Headquartered at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, you can either start your journey into creative bliss there or jump on any of the free shuttles that will be patrolling through the districts. This free, self-guided tour will jaunt through countless art galleries, venues and businesses that collectively make up our beloved Downtown creative community.
Many of the art spaces will be open to the public for only this event, which makes for the rare occasion to see some exclusive spaces and their art. Artists will open up their studios and, in some cases, their homes to give you a first glance at creativity at work.
For the adventurous family, there is Kids’ Detour, a hands-on, creative space located in the Phoenix Center for the Arts just for kids that is sure to inspire some of the future creative class. Children choose from several different art projects, as well as enjoy story time with an author. Passports will be given out to help them document where they have been and what they have done.
So, come discover the art and creativity that thrives at the heart of our fair city. Downtown is most assuredly the place to be this weekend.
Phoenix Center for the Arts is located at 1202 N. 3rd St. in Evans Churchill — light rail station at Central/Roosevelt.
