Fourth ‘Movie Monday’ At Heard Museum This Monday
It’s almost Monday and that means another Movie Mondays event at the Heard Museum.
On Monday, June 22 at 1:30pm, the museum will be showing Oil on Ice, a 90-minute vivid, compelling and comprehensive documentary connecting the fate of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to decisions America makes about energy policy, transportation choices, and other seemingly unrelated matters. Caught in the balance are the culture and livelihood of the Gwich’in people and the migratory wildlife in this fragile ecosystem.
Summer Solstice Celebration
Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave., will celebrate the summer solstice Sunday, June 21, the first day of summer and the longest day of the year.
Native + You This Friday
On Friday, June 19, come out for an evening of entertainment, lectures, dining and drinks and the Heard Museum’s 10 exhibit galleries during NU (Native + You).
Historic Homeowners’ Expo This Saturday
A free Historic Homeowners’ Expo will be offered from 9am to 1pm Saturday, June 20, at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix, 122 N. 2nd St. as part of the statewide Historic Preservation Partnership Conference in Phoenix from June 18 to 20.
The expo will offer educational workshops of interest to owners of designated historic homes such as improving energy efficiency, researching a historic home, grants and tax incentives, and how to hire a contractor.
Third ‘Movie Monday’ At Heard Museum This Monday
Movie Mondays continues at the Heard Museum on Monday, June 15 at 1:30pm with a 58-minute film, Teachings of the Tree People: The Work of Bruce Miller.
The 2006 film tells of the life of nationally acclaimed artist and Skokomish tribal leader Gerald Bruce Miller, who interpreted the sacred teachings of the natural world to anyone who wanted to learn.
Oh, Joyous Tiki Hut
The egg-shaped hut that has been in various states of disrepair over the past year on Central and Highland Avenues is well on its way to becoming Hula’s Modern Tiki, an Island-themed retro-modern joint soon to become North Central’s big hangout spot. The place used to be called Heap’s Big Beef way back when it opened in 1965, so you know it’s gotta be good.
Second Sunday At Heard Museum

In Contemporary Rhythm Exhibit Closes This Sunday
In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein, an exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum, will close on Sunday, June 14.
Phoenix Art Museum celebrates the career of one of the most successful American artists of the early 20th century with the opening of the exhibit. A founder of the famed Taos Society of Artists, Blumenschein rocketed into the spotlight with his modernist approach to capturing the American West. This major retrospective, which opened on March 15, covers every aspect of the artist’s career and is the first Blumenschein exhibition in 30 years and the first in Arizona.
Councilman Nowakowski Hosts Free Movie At Civic Space
Councilman Michael Nowakowski invites you to a free movie at the Downtown Civic Space Park featuring Casablanca on Friday, June 12. The park is located at 424 N. Central Ave and will begin at 8pm. The light rail stops just across the street at Van Buren Street and Central Avenue.
Civic Space Sculpture Engineering Forum This Friday
The engineering that went into the landmark sculpture at the new Downtown Civic Space Park will be featured at a forum at 6 p.m. Friday, June 5 at Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave.
