James K. Ballinger, Director of Phoenix Art Museum since 1982, joined the staff as Curator of Collections in 1974. He also served as Curator of American Art from 1974 to 2004, and continues to serve as Chief Curator. Mr. Ballinger received a B.A. in American History and an M.A. in History of Art from the University of Kansas, and completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Prior to coming to Phoenix Art Museum, he held the position of registrar at the University of Kansas Museum of Art (now the Spencer Museum of Art).
