The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to struggle, as they were swept in Boston before heading to Detroit to win only one of three games. The team announced last week that they had traded longtime fan favorite Conor Jackson to the Oakland Athletics for relief prospect Sam Demel. The team hopes to get some excellent pitching from the new major leaguer as he is added to the bullpen.
The D-backs were edged by the Tigers in their first game in Detroit. In the second game, the team earned its only win in the series. In the final game of the series, the team faced former D-back Max Scherzer, who pitched seven innings, striking out eight batters.
The Diamondbacks returned to Phoenix to face the 2009 World Series Champion New York Yankees. In game one of the series at Chase Field, the D-backs had the Yankees’ number, as they were able to knock A.J. Burnett all over the park. With a total of four homers in the game, the D-backs exhibited their power by defeating their opponent convincingly. The final two games of the series were not so fruitful. In the second game, D-backs relief gave up six runs in one inning and could never recover. In the final game of the series, Adam LaRoche drove in all D-backs runs as the team would lose by one in extra innings.
Sam Demel came in to pitch for the D-backs, striking out four batters. The new addition to the team has yet to give up a run and looks to be a welcomed addition. Meanwhile, Justin Upton is in the running for the 2010 All-Star game, and had a wonderful game against the Yankees with two homers, for a total of 13 on the season. You can show your support for Upton by voting for him on the All-Star ballot.
This week, the D-backs will hit the road to visit Tampa Bay and St. Louis before returning home for Fourth of July weekend.
