Carly’s Bistro Bar/Bistro
Not quite a dive, but certainly not upscale, Carly’s has been serving up a rotating selection of beer and wine for a few years now, coupled with a strong selection of sandwiches, wraps, salads and soups, plus an ever-popular late-night appetizer menu. A common meet-up hub for the artwalk crowd, Carly’s hosts live music several nights a week and has a regular cast of outgoing regulars. Bonus: The bartenders pour a mean Guinness and know a thing or two about the Downtown arts scene as well. H.B. Hanratty’s Dive Bar
Truckin’ along for more than 30 years, H.B. Hanratty’s has a set group of local Phoenician regulars who have grown up with the watering hole. Touting pool, darts and pinball amongst its draws, Hanratty’s won’t offer anything unique, but its old-school saloon atmosphere and cheap drinks continue to draw people in. If you’re looking for flat-screen TVs and surround sound, head elsewhere. This is a spot for those that prefer stiff drinks a bit more than watching the game. Open 2-2 daily. 537 E. Camelback Rd., Uptown. (602) 274.3067

The Lost Leaf Bar
To say it’s Downtown’s most eclectic beer and wine list is a vast an understatement. The Lost Leaf, with free live music virtually every night and a neighborhood late night crowd that’s nothing if not consistent, won’t offer you any appetizers, but who needs food when there’s so much to try. The selection (100+ beers and constantly growing), divvied up by type and place of origin, is housed by the bottle, packed sardine-like in the glowing fridge centerpiece of this bungalow’s half-kitchen. Wine and even more beer are stocked below the bar. Go often, as the space also doubles as one of Downtown’s more interesting art galleries. 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. 914 N. 5th St., Evans Churchill. (602) 258.0014

Majerle’s Sports Bar Bar and Grill
The original outpost of former Phoenix Suns star Dan Majerle’s prosperous local restaurant chain, Majerle’s Downtown branch continues to be a preferred hangout for lively game watching. Serving heightened versions of familiar bar foods in a comfortable setting (think burgers, sandwiches, salads and fried finger foods), it’s hard to find fault with such a dependable standby. 24 N. 2nd St., Downtown. (602) 253.900

Rasputin Vodka Bar Bar OPENING MAY 2011
1 E. Washington St., Downtown.

Roosevelt Tavern Bar/American
Riding on his previous success at Matt’s Big Breakfast, Matt Pool tries his luck as a bartender, with surprisingly sophisticated results. Dimly lit, elegant without being stuffy, the Roosevelt Tavern was an instant favorite among, well, everyone. The ever-revolving taps (with kegs brightly on display in the community table back room) and fine selection of wines and cheeses keep patrons coming through the door, and the menu of bar bites is far from the standard fare. The grilled cheese and tomato soup is lauded as one of the best in the city, and items like the Sweet Moses (a contemporary roast beef sandwich) are unique in the typical bar realm. Thursday’s pasta night is also a huge hit. Make sure to check out the tweets to see the current selection. Sunday happy hour all day. 5 p.m.-midnight Tuesday-Thursday, 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday-Sunday. 816 N. 3rd St., Evans Churchill. (602) 254.2561

Located in an updated, circa early 1900s Victorian charmer within Heritage Square, the British pub offers more than 50 different stripes of local and imported brews alongside heartwarming edible standbys like burgers, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie and yes: bangers and mash. High-definition screens surround, providing great perches for prime-time spectator sports. Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., Friday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. 628 E. Adams St., Downtown. (602) 256.0223

Seamus McCaffrey’s Irish/Pub
A sturdy Downtown favorite for years, whether for a dependable workday lunch or late-night crawl, Seamus McCaffrey’s Irish Pub effortlessly delivers the goods — and the atmosphere. With Guinness on tap and straightforward bar food on the menu, a day’s waylay at Seamus’ while catching up on the scoreboards (via one of the bar’s numerous televisions) is an experience ensured to deliver. 18 W. Monroe St., Downtown. (602) 253.6081
