This past Monday Tempe hosted the U.S. premiere of Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman and Live Schreiber. People waited in line during the wee hours of the morning just to get free tickets to the showing.

What does this event say to me? People need more free movies. Have no fear – Free Phoenix is here.

When looking for free movies, it’s best to start with local museums. The Phoenix Art Museum not only shows classic films that are open and free to the public throughout the year, but also has a partnership with No Festival Required. No Festival Required seeks to bring thoughtful and provocative cinema from local, national and international filmmakers to the Phoenix area, often hosting short films and festivals in the museum’s Whiteman Hall Auditorium. Upcoming events included a showing of The Cats of Mirikitani, a documentary film by Linda Hattendorf, on Sunday, May 24 at 1pm.

Perhaps you feel that sitting inside a freezing theater in the middle of an Arizona summer is a waste of the outdoors. If so, check out some of the parks in and around Phoenix. Biltmore Fashion Park offers movies each Friday until May 8 on its center lawn. Movies start at 7:30pm. The newly opened Downtown Civic Space will also host an outdoor movie night on Saturday, May 2 at 7:30pm, featuring the movie WALL-E and treats for viewers.

Changing Hands Bookstore seeks to appease both the music and movie lover in one fell swoop. The Tempe landmark hosts a Community Movie night once a month at 6pm, featuring music documentaries. On May 22, Changing Hands will show I Am Trying To Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco. Music lovers can even finish the night off by purchasing an album next door at Hoodlums Music & Movies.

Still need more ideas on where to mooch a movie? Check out your local library for programs. Popular movies are often shown at community colleges or at one of the many Arizona State University campuses as well. And of course stay tuned to the Downtown Phoenix Journal for daily information!
